Heritage / Visitor Centre
The Whitworth Historical Society was formed by local enthusiasts in the year 1973, and is located at the Whitworth Museum on North Street, Whitworth, in the Borough of Rossendale in East Lancashire.
There is a splendid reference library including many documents relating to the town. We also have a large collection of photographs depicting the people and the past of Whitworth Valley. Come and see if you can put names to faces: find an old school friend, a relative…or even yourself!
The society also has a programme of monthly lectures, which are held on the first Wednesday of each month between the months of September and June. Visitors are welcome to come along and view our comprehensive archives and collection of items and photographs relating to the history of the Whitworth area. People interested in genealogy can visit the museum to try and find details of their family's history, and Society Committee member Paula Bradbury offers a Genealogical Research service which may be able to help.
One of the nice things about Whitworth is that it only has one main road - Market Street - and this runs right the way through the entire valley, from Healey Corner at the Rochdale end (south), to the Bacup boundary at Brittania (north), and the Whitworth Museum is just a short way from the main road, at roughly the central point of the valley.
The museum is open to the public on Tuesday's 19:30-21:00, Saturday's 14:00-16:00, and other times by prior arrangement only.
